Authority: Do we understand, and are we compliant with, all our legal and legislative obligations?

May 31, 2018 | Mayor's Blog

Question 8 in the “10 Hardest Questions to answer in Local Government”.

The answer to this one is absolutely, although with new legislation coming out on a regular basis, a lot of our time and resources are spent on keeping up.

We have people employed for the purpose of ensuring we are compliant with around 150 different pieces of legislation which are applicable to local government.

We have legislation around the environment, waste, roads, water, procurement, animals, noxious weeds, town planning, building and plumbing stipulations, what we can sell, what we can buy, who can sign what, who can make a decision, how we hire people, how we fire people, when we can enter a private property and when we can access private information, just for some brief examples.

Councillors are also bound by legislation which ensures we are making impartial decisions in the best interest of the community. As a government body we take our legal and legislative obligations extremely seriously and hold our individual and collective integrity paramount.
