Join the celebration… North Burnett celebrates Australia Day 2020

Jan 22, 2020 | Front Page Feature, News

Australia Day is the perfect opportunity for residents of the North Burnett to come together to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian. It’s a day for reflecting on our achievements and taking pride in our great nation. It’s the day for us to re-commit to making Australia and our communities an even better place for the future.

The North Burnett Regional Council has partnered with local community groups to host Australia Day celebrations throughout the region, so come and join us on Sunday, 26 January for an Aussie breakfast and congratulate our Australia Day award recipients!  Bring your family, friends and neighbours and help celebrate what makes our nation great! On top of celebrating the region’s achievers, we are also welcoming the region’s newest residents as part of the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony, being held in Monto this year.

2020 will see the introduction of the inaugural North Burnett Regional Australia Day Awards. These awards are a new addition to the local awards in each community. The Regional Awards strive to unite the North Burnett by recognising extraordinary talent and acknowledge the valued contribution people have made to inspire and enrich the lives of others throughout our great region. The Regional awards will include the North Burnett Regional Citizen, Young Citizen, Cultural, Sports and Volunteer of the Year awards, all of which will be presented at Australia Day Ceremonies across the region.

Council is pleased to announce that we are privileged to have two Australia Day Ambassadors to celebrate with us in 2020! Carmel Crouch will be our guest speaker at Biggenden and William (Bill) Nancarrow will be speaking in Monto.

The Australia Day Ambassador program sends high achieving Australians to over 300 community celebrations nationwide every Australia Day. Ambassadors are past recipients of the Australian of the Year Awards, sportspeople, scientists, businesspeople, actors and community workers who provide inspiration and pride to Australia Day events and activities.

Carmel Crouch is a distinguished businesswoman and community leader known for her work in building capacity and empowering individuals and communities towards independence. A long-time advocate for people with a disability, Carmel has worked for more than 30 years developing programs and services that provide people with a disability with equal opportunities for employment, housing, happiness, health and wellbeing. As Managing Director of STEPS Group of companies, Carmel’s focus on strategic parterships has been key to supporting positive outcomes for individuals and establishing stronger communities.

Bill Nancarrow was born in Monto and has held many assistant coach, coach and team manager positions over his coaching career with some highlights including the Beijing Paralympics and the recent Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. He has been awarded the Col Marsh Volunteer of the Year Award and recently the Coach of the Year in 2017.

The Ambassador Program is an integral part of Australia Day and each Ambassador is chosen for their achievements and ability to inspire.  As the 2020 Australia Day Ambassadors, Mr Nancarrow and Ms Crouch will play an important role in the celebrations, spreading messages of inspiration and what it means to be Australian.  For further information on our Ambassadors, feel free to visit https://www.northburnett.qld.gov.au/australia-day.
