Australia Day is a time for all Australians to come together to reflect on the past, present and future, respect one another and celebrate each other’s achievements.

Over the past year our region has faced fire, drought and the coronavirus pandemic. Australia Day 2021 presents us with a welcome opportunity to reflect on our recent challenges, respect those who put others before themselves and celebrate our region’s resilience and unity.

Join in the celebrations on Tuesday, 26 January with an Aussie breakfast and congratulate our Australia Day Award recipients. Council has partnered with local community groups to put on these great events throughout the region.  Bring your family, grab your friends and neighbours and help celebrate what makes our nation great!

We will also be welcoming our newest citizens as part of the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony in Mt Perry this year.

Council is pleased to announce that we are privileged to have Australia Day Ambassador Associate Professor Richard Lewandowski, attending our Mt Perry celebrations.

Associate Professor Richard Lewandowski graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School in 1981 and became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in both General Surgery (1990) and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (1993). Richard founded Operation Smile Australia, for which he received a Queensland Greats Award in 2004.

Dr Lewandowski became involved with Operation Smile while studying at Eastern Virginian Medical School, in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. Dr Lewandowski volunteered on medical missions to China, Colombia, Gaza, Kenya, Philippines and Russia. He was also involved in the medical educational training sessions, and in the training of Operation Smile International Fellows.

Upon his return to Australia, he and his wife Sue established Operation Smile Australian Limited, dedicated to helping children from countries in neighbouring South-East Asia. They saw the need and Operation Smile Australia was born.

He is a plastic surgeon at Mater, Queensland Children’s, Greenslopes, Gold Coast and Cairns Hospitals, as well as being an Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Queensland.

The Ambassador Program is an integral part of Australia Day and each Ambassador is chosen for their achievements and ability to inspire.
